New University of Texas Coach: Salam Fayaad?

by Jeff Pozmantier on December 13, 2010[singlepic id=434 w=320 h=240 float=right]
I know it’s unlikely. Texas head coach, Mack Brown, is probably not going to reach across the ocean and dip into the West Bank to select an unproven football coach. But, think about the idea for a second. Or at least two.

Salam Fayaad, the Palestinian Prime Minister, is a U.T. grad, with a P.H.D in economics. Local connections — check! Plus a P.H.D. from Texas isn’t exactly like an Aggie P .H.D., so the guy is obviously smart. Mack will need that acumen to help Texas’s only legitimate state university try to recover the millions in lost ticket and merchandising sales suffered from their losing season.

Academic Research: The relationship between the civilian and security realms in the Palestinian Authority (PA) from the Oslo Agreement to Hamas’s takeover of Gaza By Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad img 0479 copyThis is the first Academic Research which the Middle East Post publishes on it pages. The research studies the Palestinian security forces situation since the signing of Oslo agreement and until the Hamas take over of Gaza.
Professor Oren Barrack about the seminar paper: “This is an interesting paper that discusses the relationship between the civilian and security
realms in the Palestinian Authority (PA) from the Oslo Agreement to Hamas’s takeover of Gaza. Theoretically, it employs Huntington’s book from 1957 on civil-military relations and Barak & Sheffer’s “security network” approach. Empirically, the paper draw mostly on interviews conducted with former PA security officials. The paper reads well, though there are, occasionally, some errata. It also presents several interesting insights regarding the civilsecurity
relationship in the Palestinian Territories during the Oslo period, particularly
regarding the lack of professionalism and the informal ties that existed between security officials and Fatah, businessmen, and foreign actors and the way they obstructed “objective” civilian control there, in addition to Israel’s involvement. This helps explain the weakness of the Palestinian security apparatuses in that period.

Eleven students who study at University of California, Irvine interrupted the Israeli ambassador Michael Oren while he was giving a speech[singlepic id=137 w=320 h=240 float=right] about Israel’s policy at the university. The result was that they were immediately taken out of the hall, charged with disrupting the peace, and might face suspension or expulsion from the university.

The United States and Europe witnessed many demonstrations and protest since the last war on Gaza. Most of the incidents occurred when Israeli officials were invited to make a speech about Israel’s policy and justification for its hostility

Is Democracy a Right for Everyone?

A few days ago two Arab students Ali Bhar and Nasser Odeh that study in the Hebrew university of Jerusalem were punished and humiliated because they refused to shake hands with the Israeli president Shimon Perez. The students were stopped by the security of the president and the university. Two days after the accident Ali’s dorms were searched and he was demanded to leave the dorms. According to the university Ali is to leave the dorms because he kept a nargilah (an Arab traditional smoking pipe) inside it.

Israel…A Country of Police and Force

Today tens of Arab students and a few Israelis went out to demonstrate in a peaceful allowed demonstration opposite to the main entrance of the Hebrew University. The reason of the demonstration was the memory of the Nakba that the Palestinians participate in to express their feelings about what happened to them before sixty years on Israeli hands.
