Why Israel is not ready for Peace

By Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad
Middle East Post
Recently the prisoner’s exchange which is being negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians became an interest for both sides. The Israeli [singlepic id=120 w=320 h=240 float=right]rightist government found itself in a place where it cannot decide whether to make the deal or not. Prime Minister Netanyahu Is known for his statements abut the importance of not negotiating with what Israel considers “terrorist” groups. At the same time Prime Minister Netanyahu finds himself under the pressure of the Israeli public opinion who demands for the release of the imprisoned Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Obama-Netanyahu talks see no result

The latest attempt by the US president to salvage the Middle East peace talks appears to have come to nothing after his meeting with Israel’s prime minister ended with only a brief statement from the White House.[singlepic id=78 w=320 h=240 float=right]
Binyamin Netanyahu left the White House on Monday after spending an hour and forty minutes inside with Barack Obama, without making the customary public appearance with his host.

NO PARTNER FOR PEACE: OUR AMERICAN PROBLEM

Jeff Halper

It was as if some official, perhaps one of President Obama’s “czars,” like the Czar for Demolishing American Credibility, had orchestrated a systematic campaign to isolate the US from the rest of the world, make it a political laughing-stock and, finally, render it a second-rate power [singlepic id=74 w=320 h=240 float=right]capable of throwing around tremendous military weight but absolutely incapable of leading us to a better future. The Israel-Palestine conflict, while not the world’s bloodiest, constitutes, for many people of the world, a unique gauge of American interests and intentions. So consider the messages this string of actions sent out to the world:

Latest Developments in the Middle East

Secretary Hillary Clinton made several statements in the last couple of days while visiting Israel and Egypt. Clinton started its tour by saying that it is impossible to accept the idea of putting any kind of Palestinian conditions before negotiating with Israel. Clinton also stated that Israel do not have any law background to use in order to freeze the ongoing settlement building since it already issued permissions for them.

However, Clinton stated that there are Israeli promises not to issue new permissions for building settlements in the future.

Israel’s Conditions for Peace

Recently Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would accept the idea of an Israel Palestinian peace only after the latter agrees on five conditions which Netanyahu stated. The five conditions are a recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, an agreement from the Palestinians that a peace treaty declares the end of all claims against Israel, no Palestinian refugees are to be allowed to return to Israeli territory, a demilitarized Palestinian state, and an International recognition of the demilitarization.

Netanyahu’s New Strategy

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu is trying to convince the world that he is doing everything he can to go forward in the peace process; his first move was made today in public in which he invited President Mahmoud Abbas to meet him anywhere to discuss the possibility of improving the situation.
