The situation in the Middle East keeps on developing towards the worst. Iraq is still in war although many try to convince the world that democracy has been achieved. Afghanistan is under attack and nothing until this moment has been achieved in order to say that the situation is becoming better. The Israeli Palestinian conflict is similar to the situation which we call silence before the storm. Recently the prisoner’s exchange which is being negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians became an interest for both sides. The Israeli rightist government found itself in a place where it cannot decide whether to make the deal or not. In the last couple of days Jerusalem witnessed several events and clashes between the Israeli police and Palestinian and Peace activists. More than thirty five Palestinians and Peace activists were arrested because they participated in several activities made against the Israeli settlements and the Arab cultural activities in the city.

The Israeli police claimed that none of these activities were authorized and therefore all of those who participate in it were acting against the law. The activities which were made included dancing, peaceful demonstrations, and demands to give the Palestinian residents of the city a chance to live normally without being depressed and prevented from expressing their opinion. Israel stated yesterday that more than 900 units will be built in one of its settlements in East Jerusalem. Britain, France and the United States criticized the decision and considered it an obstacle in the way of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Thousands of Palestinians are marking five years since the death of Yasser Arafat, their iconic leader who led them for nearly four decades, pushing the struggle for an independent homeland onto the world stage. Secretary Hillary Clinton made several statements in the last couple of days while visiting Israel and Egypt. Clinton started its tour by saying that it is impossible to accept the idea of putting any kind of Palestinian conditions before negotiating with Israel. Clinton also stated that Israel do not have any law background to use in order to freeze the ongoing settlement building since it already issued permissions for them.

However, Clinton stated that there are Israeli promises not to issue new permissions for building settlements in the future. Read more…

Recently the Israeli abuse in Jerusalem against the Palestinians is becoming harsher. Since Oslo’s agreement the Israeli leadership decided to do everything possible to make any kind of compromise regarding Jerusalem impossible.

The plan is to try to change Jerusalem into a complete Jewish city that holds no other religious or cultural sign even though it used to be in it since hundreds of years. Although Israel knows that any attempt to make a change in the old city and specifically in the Aqsa mosque would be like playing with fire because of its holiness and importance in the Islamic circles, it keeps on. Recently Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would accept the idea of an Israel Palestinian peace only after the latter agrees on five conditions which Netanyahu stated. The five conditions are a recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, an agreement from the Palestinians that a peace treaty declares the end of all claims against Israel, no Palestinian refugees are to be allowed to return to Israeli territory, a demilitarized Palestinian state, and an International recognition of the demilitarization.
