After three years of blockade on more than one million and seven hundred Palestinians who live in the Gaza strip, Israel is considering an easement on the entrance to the strip but refuses to end the blockade. The Israeli decision to consider an easement on the entrances to Gaza was made after the worldwide criticism that was made about the Israeli policy regarding the Gaza strip and the late freedom flotilla incident that Israel killed in it nine peace activists while preventing it from reaching Gaza. The freedom flotilla events brought great pressure and criticism of Israel all around the world. The reactions varied between cutting diplomatic relations with Israel, withdrawing the ambassador and even going to the UN Security Council to condemn Israel for the killing of the sixteen activists that were on the ships.

Since the 1967 war between Israel and the Arabs, East Jerusalem has been occupied. The inhabitants of the city are Palestinians who are not allowed any kind nationality and are suffering from hard conditions once talking about the community, political and economical situation. After his meeting with Israel Defense minister Ehud Barak, Gates seemed to agree that Syria is providing Hezbullah with missiles and scuds. Gates commented saying: “Syria and Iran are providing Hezbullah with rockets and missiles of ever-increasing capabilities,” and that “Hezbullah has far more rockets and missiles than most governments in the world.”

The tensions between Israel and Syria are increasing after the former threatened to respond by attacking both Syria and Lebanon if Israeli territories would be attacked with scuds. Read more…

While U.S special envoy Mitchell is meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a group of seventy Israeli settlers are demonstrating in the Arab village Silwan in East Jerusalem.
The seventy settlers were given permission by the Israeli police to demonstrate in the Arab neighborhood with Israeli flags. The Palestinians considered this action an assault on the Palestinian presence in the city of Jerusalem and the result is a beginning of clashes which are taking place now and would expand to other parts of the city. While U.S officials have criticized advertisements which were made in favor of Israel’s position on Jerusalem, the Syrian President Bashar Alassad is visiting Egypt to discuss many matters including the possibility of a war between Syria and Israel.
The supporting advertisements were made by the president of the World Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder and Nobel peace prize Laureate Elie Wiesel. The American officials agreed that such advertisements are not a wise move. It seems that the Israeli leadership finds it hard to accept any kind of commitment to stop the settlements in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government does not agree on any kind of settlements freeze in East Jerusalem. Recently East Jerusalem and most of the West Bank territories witnessed violent clashes between the Israeli police and Palestinian protestors. The clashes started after an Israeli declaration of considering the Ibrahemi Mosque in Hebron and Belal’s mosque in Bethlehem part of the Jewish religious heritage that will be developed and protected by the Israeli government.
