Indirect Talks begin between Israel and the Palestinians
The Palestinian spokesman Saeb Erekat stated yesterday that indirect talks have started between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The Palestinian leadership [singlepic id=183 w=320 h=240 float=right] was approved to start the indirect talks after the PLO, Fatah leadership and the Arab leaders gave it the green light to do so.
Senator Mitchell has played an important role in convincing the two sides to agree on starting the indirect talks. Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that indirect talks would not help in achieving a real peace agreement and that direct talks would be much better. The Palestinian leadership agreed on going to indirect talks only because of the American promises which were given regarding the Israeli settlements and a complete freeze of the buildings in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Is it Real Silence..or Silence before a Real Storm?
The silence which was felt recently in the situation of the Israeli Palestinian conflict seems to end soon. The Israeli government has been formed and the International community wants to see an improvement in the negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
In his last visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories, George Mitchell stated that the two states solution is the only way to end the conflict.
A Change in Policies Strikes the Middle East
Following several former steps made by the new American Administration, The U.S is acting in the Middle East in a different policy trying to change the current situation. Sen. John Kerry visited Gaza, and then went to meet Syrian President Assad. The Palestinians are about to start new talks about forming a unity government and ending the division between them. Iranian-American talks are still not clear but seem to be active behind the scenes.
