EU: Construction in Gilo ‘settlement’ threatens two-state solution

Swedish Presidency of the EU calls Israel’s plan to build hundreds of new housing units in Jerusalem neighborhood ‘illegal under international law,’ adding, ‘such activities also prejudge the outcome of final status negotiations.’ Moscow says move ‘unacceptable’[singlepic id=88 w=320 h=240 float=right]
The European Union on Wednesday said it was “dismayed” by Israel’s plan to build hundreds of new housing units in Jerusalem’s southeaster Gilo neighborhood.

New Israeli Settlements in Jerusalem

Israel stated yesterday that more than 900 units will be built in one of its settlements in East Jerusalem. Britain, France and the United States criticized the decision and considered it an obstacle in the way of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.[singlepic id=87 w=320 h=240 float=right]
President Obama said that such an action will not make Israel safer and may result in a serious and dangerous Palestinian frustration.

So consider the messages this string of actions sent out to the world:

Latest Developments in the Middle East

Secretary Hillary Clinton made several statements in the last couple of days while visiting Israel and Egypt. Clinton started its tour by saying that it is impossible to accept the idea of putting any kind of Palestinian conditions before negotiating with Israel. Clinton also stated that Israel do not have any law background to use in order to freeze the ongoing settlement building since it already issued permissions for them.

However, Clinton stated that there are Israeli promises not to issue new permissions for building settlements in the future.

Saudi Arabia rejects U.S. call for ties with Israel

Saudi Arabia on Friday accused Israel of not being serious about peace with the Palestinians and rejected U.S. pleas to improve ties with Israel as a way of jump-starting regional peace talks.[singlepic id=45 w=320 h=240 float=right]
Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said the “incremental” approach used by the United States to get talks rolling would not work and core issues must be tackled.
