The Difference between Occupation and Terrorism

February 17th, 2009 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon worked hard in order to change the image of the Israeli Palestinian conflict from a case of occupation and rights, into a fight against Terrorism. This mission started on the first day of the 11th September Terrorist attacks on the United States of America.

Sharon succeeded in convincing the American administration at that time, that Israel is fighting a similar kind of terrorism in its conflict with the Palestinians. Not only he succeeded in convincing the Wet, but indeed convinced his own people to think of the Palestinians exactly as they think about radicals and Al-Qaeda organization.  This was a turning point in the way the Palestinian case was treated in the world; it turned from being a conflict about occupied lands and people rights to live with dignity and independently into a war on them and accusations which make them terrorists.

Inside the Palestinian community, an argument started between two sides about resistance and how far it services the Palestinian case in the current International community situation. The chaotic use of resistance and the unclear of ways of resisting the occupation, invested in making the situation more complicated; some consider the armed resistance false and incapable of bring the Palestinians their rights. Others consider armed resistance the only choice in liberating the Palestinian lands which were occupied and are still occupied until today; they claim that the International community is not capable of pushing Israel into a compromise and a fair solution for the Israeli – Palestinian conflict.

The argument continues until today since both sides are now more involved in the International Community and are supported in a way or another by greater powers in the world. This argument is not only in the Palestinian community, but turned to be a wide argument in the whole Arab World. A division was felt since the second war on Lebanon; Some Arab countries were named Moderates because they suggest an Arab offer for Peace with Israel. Others were called extremists or committed people because they refuse the idea of liberating the occupied lands through peace negotiations. According to them the Israeli actions in the past and until today prove that Israel is only concerned in using force to make the Arabs fear any kind of war with it.

Currently, the Israeli political society is about to unite and make a national united government in order to face the Iranian threat and deal with the Israeli Palestinian conflict with Israeli influence. The question is what are the Arabs doing to prepare themselves for a possible war in the region, the Israeli Palestinian conflict, the Lebanese internal situation, and the Arab World peoples demands which became stronger recently. The answer is that Arabs were recently active to try to create a united Arabic decision regarding the Israeli – Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians themselves started several meetings in order to end the division and search for the best strategy which must be used with the next Israeli leadership.

The situation currently seems to be calm with many efforts under the table to prepare for the next stage of the conflict, and the peoples are waiting for the leader’s decisions which will be either to improve the situation, or make it worse.

Israel is a complex nation that can’t be defined in one way by any group of people. Both these communities have been victimized in some way, but it seems that now the Arabs are becoming more victim than enemy. They have always been victims of bad western stereotypes.
