The Price of Political Stubborn

Some of the political positions, which states like Israel believe in, such as not to negotiate with “Terrorists” result sometimes in severe damage. One of the main obstacles that resulted in the latest confront between Israel and Hamas is the lack of connection between them. Israel considers Hamas a terrorist organization and fears to give it legitimacy through opening diplomatic channels with it, and Hamas considers Israel an occupier that must be only faced with force.

Israeli and Palestinian civilians are paying the price of this lack of communication between the two sides which occurs only because of certain official beliefs that both sides have. Some may say that there was a kind of communication between both sides through third parties such as Egypt, but this is not sufficient.

Since Hamas won the Palestinian parliament elections, Israel and the International community in general refused to communicate with it because of its agendas and beliefs. This pushed Hamas to become closer to the other side of the Middle East which is Syria and Iran. Boycotting Hamas resulted in making it closer to its beliefs more than before. The Realism thought that Israel and the United States worked upon prevented them from making real efforts to try to change Hamas’s position.

It is easy to state that war and force are the solution to change a certain movement beliefs and effect on the community it lives on, but the result is much harder than it seems. Many victims will fall from both sides before reaching any kind of achievement. The United States and the Soviet Union almost started a third nuclear war because of the lack of communication between them in the Cold war, and the shallow communication between Israel and Hamas resulted in the war on Gaza these days, and the launching of missiles on the south of Israel.

The change in the leadership of the World in the White House may change this way of treatment with those who are considered possible “enemies” of Israel and the west; President Obama stated several times that he believes in negotiations and discussions with those who may create a possible threat on the United States and Israel in the future such as Iran for example.

This is the difference between being a liberal and a realist since the former is ready to talk with the enemy in order to do everything possible to prevent disastrous results such as what is going on in Gaza and the south of Israel these days. Israel should reconsider its policy against Hamas because the efforts should be made to try to attract Hamas to a possible settlement instead of pushing it into supporting other powers in the region.

The idea that Israel does not negotiate with terrorists, as this article is supposes, is not true. Israel after all did negotiate with Hizbollah, an organisation that Israel does consider to be terrorist, in order to get back the two captured IDF soldiers last year. The deal caused much heartache in Israel as the deal involved the release of one of its most notorious prisoners along with 100+ other prisoners in return for the remains of 2 dead IDF soldiers.

Let it also be noted that there were no efforts made by Hamas to want to talk to Israeli officials. Assad of Syria is also known to not want to look Israeli officials in the eye despite Israeli offers to meet with him directly.

This notion of not negotiating with terrorist is an American one which Israel has been happy to adopt.
Look into history. Winston Churchill and the American President at the time met with the most notorious Murderer to negotiate peace. As you rightly point out,Israel themselves negotiated with Hizbollah. The British Goverment negotiated with the IRA. History has shown that this is the sole way tp peaceful co-existence.
The way to gain recognition from others is not through force, just like respect can be enforced it needs to be earned.

I agree with you that Israel did negotiate with Hezbollah but the situation was different because it was negotiations on war prisoners and not negotiations to seek a political solution for a conflict.
The message that i want to send through this post is that efforts were not made enough to try to bring movements like Hamas into negotiations to mind violence.
The belief that Israel and the United States adopted was to mind negotiating with organizations like hamas in order to prevent them from gaining legitimacy. Tzipi Levni stated this a few days ago.
If Israel tried to include Hamas in any negotiations about the conflict since its first day work in the Palestinian government instead of boycotting it and putting a siege on it, the results may differ.
Now this is not as easy as it appears but it worth trying. Ira was convince after negotiations, Fatah changed, and many other organizations. But remember that i mean negotiations with results and not negotiations to gain time.

I understand your point and agree that it is certainly worth trying.
Unfortunately many efforts were made and negotiations were encouraged by Egypt and Israel but they were refused. This was a mistake on Hamas’s part and they did not expect Israel to attack. This is something that even Hamas’s most senior officials (Khaled Mashaal) condemn those in Gaza (Ismail Haniyeh) are arguing about.

First of all zyad Israel doesnt negotiate for end this struggle, israel negotiates to cool down the situation and Oslo Agreement is the best example. Israel negotiates when it feels that the other side is undefeatable and i bet you it will negotiate the legal Hamas Government sooner or later and under Hamas conditions.

Brave i can see you’re an exremist israeli soldier, i want to tell you that Israel is not ligtimate Israel should fullfill uited nations calls all over th history Israel is the most terrorist country all over th world… israel negotiated hezbollah to get back 2 DEAD SOLDIERS not war captured soldiers and i think it will negotiate Hamas to get back the dead gilad shalit

    Brave…..
I believe you do have access to CNN.. In case you not sure…YES it is an americam TV station….
Please watch them and try to understand for yourself as to who broke the cease fire in November since you did not believe me when i pointed it out to you. Furthermore, in case your democratic government is witholding this information from you. A member of congress has demanded from the Bush Administration to explain why Israel has been allowed to violate the US Law in the use of the weapons provided by the USA. Since this administration is on its way out, guess what? The Obama administration will be investigating this. Remember, I have warned you that changes are afoot and you know what I am looking forward to? The fact that you will become a more informed person and realise the dis service your democratic government has afforded you. Media censorship has no place in a true democracy……agree or disagree BRAVE?
