Israel…Hamas…and Fateh

December 9th, 2008 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

In one of her last statements, Tsipi Levni demanded from the Israeli leadership to reconsider the choice of invading Gaza to weaken Hamas power. Ehud Barak said that Israel is just about striking Hamas. In the same time Israeli officials said that Israel is interested in continuing the seize fire agreement with Hamas.

Hamas stated several times that it is interested in continuing the seize fire agreement but also said that it will use the choice of power once Israel attacks Palestinians or assassinates Palestinian personalities. Ahmad Abed Ilrahman a Fateh leader stated a few days ago that Fateh will reconsider the choice of resistance if the Israeli settlers will keep on attacking Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. Ahmad also said that Israel will have to choose between either peace talks or the support of Israeli extremist actions that aims the Palestinian civilians.

The Israeli policy is not clear in its way of dealing with both Fateh and Hamas. From one side Israel is benefiting from Hamas actions in order to gain an International sympathy with its actions against Palestinians. From the other side Israel continues to state that it is concerned in its cooperation with the Fateh leadership in the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. In reality there has been no improvement in the peace talks between the two sides since Abu Mazen became the Palestinian president and even before.

Israel is convinced that Hamas is the real power in Gaza and knows that there will be no choice except sitting with Hamas to arrange the situation in Gaza. The United States and the President Elected Obama also knows that it is important to join Hamas in any future talks about peace or an agreement because of the power it represents in Gaza.

Fateh leadership is not aware of this fact and therefore still refuses to reach an agreement with Hamas in order to create a unity government between the two parties. The Fateh and Hamas disagreement and internal war is only weakening the Palestinian power and giving a chance for Israel to deny any participation in negotiations using the claim of violence, and of course giving it a permission to attack Palestinians without any international conviction.

Neither Israel nor the Palestinians are in a situation that shows their ability to reach a peace agreement in the current time and without a foreign International and Arabic pressure both of them will never be pushed to sit and talk seriously about a solution that will give a chance for both peoples to live in peace and without violence.
