Where is it going?

December 6th, 2007 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

After the Annapolis conference, a lot of people and political analysis were asking the same question…where is it going? Is there any chance for the negotiations that are supposed to start between the both sides, and how far these negotiations can go… What will be the supporting level for these negotiations from the public and what did the two leaderships give in a practical and touched way to their peoples in order to get their support. If we look at the situation from a practical way, then we should easily notice that the only thing that even made the Palestinians and the Israelis to go to negotiations is the American pressure done by Bush to get something achieved before he ends his period as a president. The only thing that could help in getting any improvement in the situation is only this pressure but the question is how much it could help if there is no real work from the both sides of the conflict. The Israelis made it clear from the beginning that they are not giving any promise that obliges them to accomplish anything until the end of year 2008. They said that they will work on improving the situation and also negotiating but still they are not sure of it. At the same time the Israeli army operations are still taking place in Gaza and also the West Bank that is supposed to be under Abu Mazen forces authority. The last accident happened in Bethlehem before a few days when some Palestinian policemen shooted at a suspected car that appeared to be an Israeli intelligence car working in the field, the Israelis shooted back and killed one Palestinian officer and injured another three. The Israeli army apologized. If any of the both sides really wants to reach peace and in this short period, then they should start working quickly in several directions. One of these directions should be real secret negotiations with results and another direction could be to make the people’s life easier by removing checkpoints, bringing security back and preventing anyone to become over the law.
