The Last minutes before Annapolis

In the last minutes before the conference, still the Israeli and the Palestinian teams are trying at Washington to come out with one statement about what is agreed on until now. But it seems that it will be difficult for them to get such a statement while still they didn’t make it clear to both of the teams about what should be agreed on or lets say what can they agree on without facing difficulties back home in their governments and specially the Israeli government. Actually today I was discussing the east Jerusalem matter with an Israeli lawyer, and I was trying to make him understand that since the seventies until this Annapolis conference, the main problem was about how the Israelis identified east Jerusalem and the areas that they were ready to withdraw from, and how the Palestinians identified east Jerusalem and the areas they demanded to take back. The mean while Israeli government doesn’t have any problem with withdrawing from some areas that they consider as east Jerusalem but have no political importance for the Palestinians such as a camp fro the refugees in a place called shufaat or another village called “Jabal ilMukaber” . The real areas that the Palestinian authorities are talking about in East Jerusalem are the areas that really are considered important for the Palestinians such as the center of East Jerusalem out side the Old City.According to the last American and Israeli statements, the negotiations that are supposed to start after this conference must end before President Bush ends his period as a President, but is this possible? Well if it will be possible and all these cases may be solved in a time of one year, then this may be the first real improvement that the history will witness in the Israeli – Palestinian conflict, but what is needed at the same time is the public support for the both leaders in order to achieve such a thing. The surprising thing was the public opinion statistics that showed that the more than half of the Israeli and the Palestinian people do support the Annapolis conference although that they are not sure of how far it may succeed. Once thing that made the people support again the peace direction may be the violence and war they suffered from since seven years or more until now. The real change could be noticed in the Syrian participation in this conference although no promises were given to discuss their occupied lands. Its one of the steps that President Asad is doing and taking risk by doing with his relation with Iran.
