What does War bring us?

October 23rd, 2008 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

A few days ago I met the children of my cousin who was killed in 2001 in the beginning of the intifada. The moment I saw his son Odai, I remembered when I was holding him on my shoulder while still he was forty days old on the day his father died. His young six years old sister was standing and smiling to me, she said aren’t you my father’s friend? This tragedy that I saw in my eyes made me think about what war does bring us.

It is easy for people to start a war once someone trespass their red line. No one asks himself what would be the results of this decision because we are talking here about whether to be or not to be. Pride, honor, and existence draw someone to make anything to prevent anyone from attacking him or her. Since the beginning of the second Palestinian intifada the Palestinian people lost the best of its leaders, young men, and people. The economical situation is becoming worse everyday and the hope for a political solution is almost impossible.

It is weird that we lose our beloved people for the sake of accomplishing a specific goal in life in which the possible victory would taste differently when we celebrate it without those who paid for it. The Israeli Palestinian conflict is not the first one in history. Humans fought continuously through history to defend certain beliefs and homes. The Algerians paid the price of one million martyrs to achieve their independence. If you ask them about the one million men who died, they will tell you that they are still remembered until today.

Others could tell you that life is just a short journey that will end and the life that comes after it is what should be worked for in this life. Children, men and women die for these beliefs while no one ever asked about who is being killed and why. Humans forgot the place that they come from originally and divided themselves and their lands for smaller parts and groups that fight each other in their short life.

Now some would say that these are only words of oneness and peace dreamers, but think about it. Others will say that if humans won’t fight each other then what will fill their lives. It is in their nature that they are ready to stand up and fight to defend and sometimes offend. Imagine that people spent their time in more and more achievements instead of wars; what could our life be at this moment.

It is easy to start a war and to prepare your people for it but even though sometimes you find yourself obliged to stand and fight will your conscience bare the possible feeling of guilt because of all of those who would die for the sake of words that you learned since you were a child about honor, dignity, and pride?….I don’t know.
