Olmert meets Abu Mazen to discuss the First Step.
by Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad ~ October 27th, 2007. Filed under: Palestinian, Israeli Conflict. In their last meeting, Abu Mazen and Ehud Olmert concentrated on talking about the first step each side should take after the November Peace conference. Israel keeps on asking from the Palestinian authorities to start immediately the process of ending the activities of what it calls (terrorist organizations). On the other side the Palestinians are still demanding for a paper that includes the solution or lets say the hints for finding a solution for the final stage negotiations, which means Jerusalem, the refugees, and the boarders of the promised Palestine state. In this meeting Ahmad Qurei and Tseepi Levni joined the two Israeli and Palestinian leaders in their discussions, the reason was the difficulties they are facing while they sit to discuss the paper that they are supposed to prepare before going to the peace conference in November. If we concentrate on what really the Israelis want to get out of these meetings and this conference, it is easy to notice that Olmert does not wish to face some kind of a rebel on him form his own government because of one statement that he may say about the dividing of Jerusalem or the right of return for the Palestinian refugees. Olmert is acting with attention to all the risks that are surrounding him from his Israeli partners. His main goal is to low down the hopes of the Arab and Palestinian peoples about what would get out of this conference. The reason is that he really knows that nothing serious will result because of his meetings with Abbas or the coming Peace conference, and he knows that the reaction would be really difficult and strong if some other Palestinian parties will be able to prove that the peace choice is a failure choice. Well that’s what makes me think that what Abu Mazen said about meetings between Hamas and Israel is true. Hamas is the main substitute for Abu Mazen if he fails and loses the trust of his people completely. That’s why Israel may really have started some kind of negotiations with Hamas, that they also know they made a big mistake by closing on their selves in Gaza and cutting all their relations with all who are surrounding them only for the sake of capturing some old buildings that they considered the symbol of Fatah and Abu Mazen in Gaza, and occupying them may make them feel better from the side of being the stronger between the Palestinian movements.
Abu Mazen is in a bad situation; before isolating Hamas in Gaza and declaring his peace program loudly, he thought that by doing this, Israel and the United States may really give him something true this time, such as withdrawing from all the Palestinian lands that Israel reoccupied after the Intifada, or even declaring a final paper as a solution for the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. But what he really got was nothing. His people are losing faith in him day after day, and the peace choice may be destroyed completely if the November Peace conference wont succeed and bring the Palestinians the minimum they are asking for. Now is Abu Mazen really capable of ending the Palestinian movements by accusing them of terrorism? Will the Palestinian people understand and accept such a thing? Can terrorism be mixed up with Resistance? What is the difference between these two words and how the 11/9 events changed the whole meaning and made everything look like terrorism. Okay we do agree that killing innocent people is terrorism, but what if the Palestinian people rebel again after finding itself lost without anything, and return to the peaceful Intifada kind that includes only stones and international sympathizing. What shall Israel do if this happen? Doesn’t this make you remember the days of Yitzhak Rabin and the beginning of the Intifada? This Israeli leader served in the Israeli army for 27 years and became one of the most popular and known Israeli leaders, after all the wars he led and participated in, he found out that the only solution for the Palestinian conflict was making peace and sharing lands with them so they can live and forget about fighting Israel. Before two days, was his memory, and I was watching a documentary film about his life, talking about his achievements and strategies, and something came out in my mind; when was the last time we heard an Israeli Prime Minister making a speech to thousands of Israelis telling them YES FOR PEACE, NO FOR VIOLENCE although some Bombings happened inside Israel at the time he was planning for a final peace agreement. No one, and that’s why he have been assaulted. At Rabin’s days, the Israeli people had a majority of those who believed in peace, and that’s why the extremist Israelis found no choice except of putting an end for the life of this leader that could have made a lot if he was still living. Some Israeli politicians and analysts were asked: Why Israel almost lost or even lost the peace it made with Jordan and Egypt and why the peace process paused with the Palestinians? They said the non-existence of a real leader that can take decisions and achieve them is one reason. The other reason is that Israel always searched only for peace with governments and never thought about the peoples. And the last and most important reasons for the non peace situation with Arabs until now, is the Palestinian case, because Israel is still not ready to accept the idea of sharing Palestine lands between Jews and Arabs.
