Economy and Political Decisions
by Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad ~ October 1st, 2008. Filed under: Iranian Issues, international concerns.A couple of days ago, a young nineteen years old Palestinian from East Jerusalem tried to hit about fifteen Israeli soldiers with his car. According to the family of the young Kasem, he was planning to get engaged to his cousin but the family refused and therefore he decided to commit suicide. The Israeli intelligence and police preferred to accuse the young man of terrorism and considered this accident a terrorist attack on innocent Israeli civilians. However the discussion about whether it was an accident of suicide committed by a normal permanent resident or a terrorism action is not important at this moment.
The real important event is the Israeli suggested solutions for how to stop these kinds of minor attacks inside the holy city. In the last three days it was clear in all the News Israeli channels that all the Israeli analysts and politicians were agreeing on the choice of destroying Palestinian houses, putting more checkpoints, charging the Palestinians for every small thing such as a broken breaks light, and turning their life into hell to punish them and prevent them from attacking Israelis any more.
It seems that these politicians are not living in Jerusalem and doesn’t know the truth of living in it. The idea of putting checkpoints and destroying homes is not new. There are a lot of checkpoints that surround East Jerusalem and even inside it since the beginning of the second Intifada and were never removed until this moment. Hundreds of Palestinian homes were destroyed and thousands are waiting on the list to be destroyed soon. The Israeli peace organizations know a lot of this issue and already sent tens of reports describing the anger created inside the Palestinians with every house removed.
The Palestinians in East Jerusalem are considered poor and are living under the lowest income average. The People in East Jerusalem lost the most important thing that every people search for which is their identity. They don’t have a nationality, a passport, or even the right to make their own activities and work within organizations peacefully without the interference of the Israeli intelligence and police.
This group of people lacks any kind of leadership and is being divided and destroyed. The real answer to the Israeli question about how to stop these terrorist attacks is to go back to the Israeli policy in East Jerusalem and examine it. Israel’s policy is not fulfilling the minimum that the United Nations laws demand for in any occupied land around the world and for the people who live in it. East Jerusalem citizens are considered permanent residents in Israel, pay all the taxes, and are not given the same social services such as inside Israel because they are considered a part of the West Bank and Gaza population that is ruled by the Palestinian Authorities.
If Israel admits this relation between East Jerusalem people and the Palestinians, then it should admit the relation between the land and these people that are living on it…..Only if they really want to stop the attacks on Israelis.
