New Cold War?

August 14th, 2008

The events of the war between Georgia and Russia made the world live again the days of the cold war between the west and the east. The Russian interference in Georgia and the surprising and fast attack on it leaves one impression which is that Russia was looking for any opportunity to prove again that it is a power and hegemony in the world.

The first American response was not enough to make the Russians stop their military activities in Georgia. The Georgian president criticized the White House and wondered why it didn’t show any firm statement against the Russians. The weird thing is that it took the White House a couple or three days to understand what is going on and to give a stronger statement and commentary on the Russian discipline in the former Soviet Union lands.

The European Union showed again a sign of weakness and no capability to interfere military in the conflicts that are close to it. The man that was moving and deciding in this late war is Putin. The Russian president showed up as a character that his only career is to make speeches while the real planning and strategy was made by Putin. President Bush and the west were hesitating at the beginning of whether to get themselves in a complicated situation with Russia at the time the United States is busy with so many other issues around the world including Iran and Iraq.
The Russians turned out to be serious and determined to go on with their war to prove that they can control and take decisions as hegemony without other countries approval to do so. The American government realized that it is the time to go out and send a serious message to Russia to stop its activities if it wants to keep on its relations with the west. The Russian response from the other side was to ask the Americans to make their decision of whether to choose Georgia’s temporary government or Russia as a companion. Doesn’t this look like the Cold War messages and arguments? Well yes and only a small mistake such as the Georgian president statement of the American taking control of the airports in Georgia could have made the situation worse and more dangerous.

Although the Pentagon, Britain, and other countries declared the pausing of their cooperation and work with Russia to revaluate their relation with Russia, the diplomatic and intelligence channels are supposed to be really busy these days to try to fix the serious crises between the two great powers. The question is if this is only the beginning in a Russian long journey of hegemony and power show or it is a single event that will go peacefully.
