News from the Middle East: Israel, Iran, and the Palestinian territories

June 29th, 2008 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

Today the Israeli minister’s council agreed on releasing Samir Kuntar the Lebanese prisoner with another four of his companions and an unknown number of Palestinian prisoners in order to return its two Israeli kidnapped soldiers.

The Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that Israel does not expect that the two soldiers are still alive.

This deal will be considered as a victory for the Lebanese Hezbollah specially that Palestinians will be released too in which this would make Hezbollah popularity better in the Arab world. On the other side the deal with Hamas in Gaza is not improving at the meanwhile. Some Israeli sources said that Hamas is asking for the release of the Fatah popular leader Marwan Barghooty as a part of the deal that includes releasing the Israeli kidnapped soldier Gelad Shaleet.

If Marwan Barghooty succeeds to return back to his home and his activity as one of the most important and influencing leaders in Fatah, there may be an improvement in the negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas in Gaza.

Another interesting event is the statement that Mahmoud Alzahar made about the Jihad movement that launched rockets on Israeli targets near Gaza as a response on assassinating some of its leaders in the West Bank.

Alzahar is known as one of the most extremist leaders in Hamas and a well known activist that did his best in the past and at the time of Yasser Arafat to make as much attacks as he can inside Israel to destroy any chance of an agreement with Israel.

Alzahar said that launching rockets at the time Hamas signed a cease fire with Israel is not a patriotic work. I wonder why he changed his ideas and beliefs or is it only that he is the one who is sitting on the chair of ruling and wants to prove that he can control.

Iran from its side directed some missiles towards the Daymonah Israeli nuclear facility as a response to the Israeli trainings that were held in the last week of how to attack Iranian nuclear buildings from the air. A report said that Israel will strike Iran between November 2008 and January 2009 in case Obama wins the American Presidential elections.
