A Ceize Fire in Gaza?

by Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad ~ June 20th, 2008. Filed under: Palestinian, Israeli Conflict, The Youth Group.

Today at six am a seize fire commenced between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Actually while I was writing this I remembered that I did write the same words in the past and believed at that time that it was to be a serious seize fire that proved in the end to fail. The Israelis agreed to seize fire only for one or two reasons which could be to improve the negotiations situation about the kidnapped Israeli soldier Gelad Shaleet and beside that to have a break from the falling rockets on its south.

This means that the whole seize fire depends on how far the negotiations will go and whether Israel will receive what it seeks after that. From the other side Hamas did not lose anything from agreeing on this seize in which they will have sometime to rearrange their lines, bring more weapons into Gaza, maybe have some more time to negotiate with Abu Mazen with pressures, and of course achieve the Prisoners deal that will bring it back some popularity.

The both sides has no will of using this seize fire in order to launch for a long term seize and specially Israel is not interested in preventing itself from assassinating and having the freedom to go in and out of Gaza whenever it want. This is considered according to some Israelis a chance for Hamas to become stronger and prevention for Israel from making Hamas weaker.

Although we know that neither Hamas nor Israel wanted this seize fire because of their will for peace but indeed their will to have a break from the fighting, still the people will have a break for a while and sleep some nights without war around them.

This result was reached only because of the Egyptian efforts that were made in order to convince the both sides to agree on doing this as a first level calm down and hoped that with time things may improve and change.

Any future agreement between Hamas and the Palestinian Presidential association may help in changing the situation in Gaza and unite again a one Palestinian attitude that may really protect the Palestinians from more violence against them and will also give an International cover for their demands, needs, and mission.
