Negotiations or another round of Conflict Direction?
President Obama is supposed to meet Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu today at the White House to discuss the Israeli Palestinian talks and the [singlepic id=264 w=320 h=240 float=right] importance of starting direct negotiations between the two sides.
Another Political development which the Israeli and Palestinian sides witnessed was a surprising meeting which took place between Prime Minister Fayyad and Minister Ehud Olmert at Western Jerusalem yesterday to discuss the Palestinian demands regarding the siege on Gaza, checkpoints in the West Bank and the releasing of Palestinian prisoners. The Fayyad – Barrack meeting was criticized by the Palestinian movements that considered it a strike to the Palestinian demands which were asked for as a condition for any official meeting or negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
Prime Minister Netanyahu leaved Israel to Washington while hoping to end the latest political disagreement between Israel and the United States in order to assure a full support for Israel in the region. The Israeli government and leadership prepared very well for the meeting and made several actions in order to convince the public opinion that Israel is seriously interested in reaching an agreement with the Palestinians. The Israeli government claims to ease the siege on Gaza and allowing food to be entered into the Gaza strip. At the same time Israel continues to refuse the entering of any kind of building materials that are needed to rebuild Gaza after the latest Israeli war on it. The Israeli information department at the foreign ministry tries daily to market its opinion about Gaza and to convince the European officials that the people in Gaza are really living under good conditions.
The problem that the Israeli leadership is facing while trying to convince the world that Gaza is in a good situation is that the siege itself cannot be justified in any way. Gaza is supposed to be a territory that Israel does not interfere in its matter. Instead Gaza turned to become a pressure tool that Israel uses in order to achieve political victories. Just yesterday an Israeli soldier was convicted of killing two women civilians that did nothing except of sitting in their houses. The lie that the Israeli army is the most moral army in the world is not working anymore. The Palestinian people has been under occupation since more than sixty years and it is the time now to put an end to the last occupation and injustice which millions of Palestinians are suffering from because they are simply weak and Israel is controlling them.
The real question that we and the peoples of the free world should ask themselves is about the effort and work that the democratic and free countries are doing in order to put an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Formerly, the European countries and the United States were convinced that the Palestinians do not have a partner that works upon the “standards” they ask for. Today security forces that are trained and guided by the American General Dayton control the West Bank. Even in Gaza the situation is calm and no attacks were launched against Israel since the last Israeli war on it. This proves that the problem is not about security of finding a partner..the problem is that the Israeli leadership and unfortunately most of the Israeli people are not yet ready to make a withdrawal from the occupied territories in order to live side by side with the Palestinians. The Israeli public opinion is mislead and the people have no idea where their Israeli leadership is taking them.
Leading a country by turning it into a Police and intelligence state is a failure. Continuing an occupation that is breaking the International law and Human Rights is a crime that the Jewish people should not be making especially that it went through similar conditions only a few decades ago in Europe.
The American leadership that promised to make decisions that may change the situation in the Middle East and bring justice to all the sides of the conflict should show real interest and better ways in pushing Israel to put an end to its actions that became a violation that a child can understand. The European countries should pay enough attention to the Palestinian case exactly as it is interested in the Iranian threat on its interests. The Palestinians are not in need of more humanitarian aid and strategic plans to build an illusionist state. The Palestinian people need its liberty that it cannot live until today only to satisfy the political interests of other countries.
