Common Interests Result in Negotiations
In a surprising declaration, Israel and Syria stated yesterday that they are having secret negotiations and planning to continue forward in it. The Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that his administration was planning for this since a year and that it is not related to the last scandal that accused him of corruption.
The Syrian President Bashar Alasad wanted the entire world to know about the negotiations through his politicians and the media even though that this could affect on his relations with Iran.
The meanwhile negotiations do not sound as serious as they should be in order to achieve a serious improvement in peace. Both the Israeli and the Syrian two leaders are under pressure: Prime Minister Olmert is accused of corruption, and President Alasad is under international pressure that could result in boycotting his country and creating a serious siege on him because of his relations with the Palestinian movements and Iran.
Both of the leaders are sharing in common between them the pressure that they are going under and the only way in resting for a while is to declare about such a courageous step of launching negotiations between their two countries. This could be called the temporary cooperation between the enemies for the sake of a temporary benefit that can be gained.
Some could be more optimistic about this round of negotiations if they forget about the difficulty that Prime Minister Olmert can’t face if he mention a word about withdrawing from the Golan especially at this time; however, an army operation in Gaza could sound better for him if he searches for an Israeli support. This also could be a reason for starting negotiations with Syria to cover what could happen in Gaza.
Syria from the other side is either playing a game to prevent any new siege on it, or really is risking losing its alliance with Iran because of some Israeli promises that were brought by turkey. It is weird how Syria and Hamas changed their policy almost at the same time and started talking about negotiations and a seize fire agreement instead of war. It is either a smart game played for a certain purpose or an idiot move that will cost both of them a lot.
