President Bush again to Jerusalem
President Bush is visiting Jerusalem again for the second time in a few months without holding anything in his hands. These visits were made in order to help in pushing the peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians, but nothing did really improve since his first visit and the Annapolis meeting.
All the last negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority brought nothing back, and only resulted in giving more time for other options to be on the table. President Bush said in his last visit that he seriously asks to remove the settlements from the west bank but no one settlement was moved.
Ehud Olmert the Israeli Prime Minister and Mahmoud Abbas the Palestinian president kept on sending their teams to negotiate and kept their selves out of any argument. None of the teams did succeed in achieving anything. The map that the Israeli minister Tsipi Livni brought as an Israeli suggestion does not include anything of the Palestinian demands, indeed it includes the Israeli demand to control more lands.
The strategy that the Israeli and Palestinian negotiators tried to work upon and which is postponing the final cases to the last level of the negotiations didn’t succeed.
On the other hand, nothing changed in the daily life of the citizens: the checkpoints still exist, the assassination in Gaza that takes with it tens of children victims continued, and people are filled with more anger which could result in another strong violence wave that this time will include so many others.
All of this time that President Bush, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and President Abu Mazen are spending while nothing is changing will result soon in ending the age of what is called the Palestinian authority, Israel will lose another person that may have been able to help in making peace, and the Iranian project will become soon a reality that we all will have to live with it.
The Palestinian Israeli conflict is the heart of the Middle East stability or chaos; this is an equation that our leaders may have to pay attention to.
