Lessons In Leadership XXXI – Making Decisions

One of the most interesting challenges that we face through life is when we have to make decisions. Our life and who we become are related to our decisions [singlepic id=234 w=320 h=240 float=right]in the past. The challenge is not in facing a situation in which we have to decide and choose what we want, but it is in the way we create choices and options that we can choose from.

We usually try to convince ourselves that we need to decide by considering the fact that we only have two choices: either this or that. Once we put ourselves in such a situation we eliminate many choices we may have and concentrate on choosing from two choices that usually seem to be the opposite of each other. Once we put ourselves in a place where we have to choose from two options we usually find difficulty in deciding. The reason is because of the choices that we already created for ourselves and the way they are opposite to each other.

The way to make good decisions starts by changing the way we see things and how we set options for ourselves. First of all the idea of putting only two options must be removed from the way of deciding anything. Start by finding at least three or four options. This may sound not easy and even far away from reality but it is important to remember that in order to make good decisions, one must work harder and think deeper. Once three options are found, one must search for the option that seems to be including the most of what he or she wants.

After finding the right option that seems to be good for our decision, one must think very well of what he or she really wants. I agree that it is impossible to get everything we want at the same time but I encourage the idea of having ambitions to get as much as possible in order to get the average that may be enough for what is needed. Another important point is fighting the idea that we must always sacrifice something in order to get another. In many situations one may succeed in getting more than what he or she thought can be obtained.

In the end, the whole process of making decisions is affected by the mind, fear of losing and the desire to get everything together. The secret is in creating a balance that takes a little from everything in order to get a result that is made of everything.
