Watan Movement…A Sustained Success

Watan student movement has been created three years ago and works at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Watan works to serve the interests of the Arab [singlepic id=176 w=320 h=240 float=right] students in the Hebrew University and several other faculties in the city.

The movement does not hold a specified political program regarding the Israeli Palestinian conflict and leaves the political opinion to be chosen by its members separately. The movement believes in the united work and action to serve the Palestinian and Arab students. The movement is not working under any political party and has been made by students who felt the need to start something which will really work to serve the benefits of the students and not for the benefits of the political parties outside the universities.

The movement has a secretary council and a president who follows up with the activities of the movement to make sure that everything is made according to the movement’s constitution. The movement holds elections to choose its council and president every year. Watan movement does not recognize the Israeli Student Union and considers itself a part of the Arab students commission that includes several other Arab student movements. Watan movement makes several activities to entertain and support the Arab students while making sure that their Arab and Palestinian identity is protected.

One of Watan’s central activities is the Heritage Day which it holds every year. In this day, the movement brings several Arab artists and singers to revive the Palestinian heritage and to remind the world with the past and the present of the Palestinian people. Watan also holds several activities that support the Palestinian presence in the city of Jerusalem.

Another project which the movement works on is a journal which is printed and distributed in the city of Jerusalem and the Hebrew University. The journal includes several articles written by the students about the political, economical and education situation in the Palestinian society. The journal also includes interviews made with Palestinian personalities.

The Uniqueness of Watan movement is that it succeeded in putting the political intolerance away from the thinking of its members and uniting everyone to work together for the sake of improving the students situation and empowering their national and Palestinian identity.
