The Palestinian Case – A Continuous Tragedy

March 24th, 2010 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

While Prime Minister Netanyahu is visiting the White House to meet President Obama, the Israeli government continues to give permits for new settlements The Palestinian Case – A Continuous Tragedy 152 320x240 palestinian refugee camp in East Jerusalem.
The latest permit was given for a plan to build twenty new settlements in the area of Sheikh Jarah. The Palestinian authority condemned the new Israeli decision and considered it a new challenge, which the American administration will have to face.

In Apec summit, the Israeli prime minister insisted on stating that Jerusalem is the united capital of Israel. According to Prime Minister Netanyahu Jerusalem is not a settlement and the “historical” relation between Jews and the city cannot be ignored.
The Israeli insistent on considering Jerusalem a united capital of Israel is preventing any kind of improvement in the negotiations between them and the Palestinians. Prime Minister Netanyahu continues to claim that Israel’s policy in Jerusalem is not affecting the Arabs while in reality Palestinians continue to suffer daily from Israeli oppression and occupation policy.

Until today East Jerusalem and all the lands, which Israeli occupied in 1967, are considered occupied territories by the International community and most of the world countries. Israel ignored all the former international demands to withdraw from the occupied lands. Instead the former and current Israeli governments continue to build settlements, move the native population, and bring in more of the Jewish population into lands which according to the International law are not of its own property.

Not only that settlements are increasing everyday and the Palestinian people is suffering from the results of occupation, but also the conditions to start any kind of negotiations are becoming more complicated. Today Israel refuses to consider Jerusalem a matter, which can be negotiated with the Palestinians. Not only Jerusalem but also the Syrian and Lebanese Arab lands became a part of Israel which cannot be discussed, The contradiction in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech can be felt; from one side he insists on declaring his will to start immediate and direct negotiations with Arabs, but from the other side he insists on refusing any kind of compromise regarding lands which basically are not of his state’s property.

The International community and the United States were ready to be responsible of the results of wars which were launched in the name of democracy in the Arab world but how come they refuse to imply on Israel to accept what the law they put applies on every democratic state? Israel is always assured that its security is important as the security of the United States. If we are talking about a democratic United States, which is supposed to be the protector of the thoughts of equality, peace, and thought that fights fascism and racism, the United States must also consider the security and daily life of the Palestinian people which have been suffering since more than sixty years.

The promise and support, which were given for the Jewish people to come and settle in a land that was populated with thousands of Palestinians, resulted in a tragedy, which the world continues to ignore until today. Instead of searching for the reasons, which invested in creating radical and extreme movements, many prefer to lecture and claim reasons, which come from a place full of hate and competition with any civilization that is different from their own and this place does not seem to be different from the radical and extreme working movements.

If the world wants to invest in achieving peace in the Middle East, it should be looking at the suffering of the other side. Everyone made mistakes but those who are ready to use a case such as the Palestinian case for political agendas such as facing Iran are playing a game which is dangerous and could cause them trouble that will not be easily solved as before.
