The Israeli Mossad and…Assassinations
Yesterday Dubai police presented several videos showing ten men and one woman who were involved in the assassination of Hamas leader
Al-Mabhouh. According to Dubai police, the 11 assassins left Dubai and are currently under an international hunt to try to catch them.
Other News sources talked about two men who were handed from Jordan to Dubai because they are suspected of being involved in the assassination. One of them is said to be a security officer in the Palestinian authorities. A spokesman of President Mahmoud Abbas denied the accusations and claimed that Hamas is suffering from serious security breaches.
Dubai Police stated that the assassins used European passports to enter Dubai and left its territories after the assassination. The security cameras caught them while they were entering the hotel, dividing themselves into separate cells which worked as watchers, and implementers. According to the Daily Telegraph a British official stated that he doubts that the Irish passports holders were Irish and said that they are rather Mossad agents who were using Irish Passports.
Dubai police stated that they suspect the Mossad of taking part in the assassination but also said that they were not working alone. No true direct proof was found to convict the Israeli intelligence “Mossad” of being involved in the operation except for the statements which were made by unidentified officials.
Although there are no material proofs that Israel took part in the assassination, the statements made, the current political situation, and the confrontation between Hamas and Israel makes Israel the first suspect. Hamas is suffering from serious problems in its security matters since this is not the first time that one of its leadership is assassinated and no one is found to blame for taking part in it. There is a breach in Hamas’s security which the leadership itself may be avoiding to investigate it.
The target is not Hamas alone since Hezbullah and Iran leaders were targeted lately. The only thing which seems not to be clear is the missing of any reaction from the sides which were targeted. Every assassination holds a message with it which wants to be understood. The reasons for the lack of any reaction could be either a plan which the targeted sides are working on and does not want to affect and impede by reacting to side events, or their serious lack of experience and abilities in working internationally.
Whether it was Israel or any other actor, the brains behind this operation were smart enough to pass through all the security checks, prevent the security camera from taking clear shots of them, worked silently and professionally, and left the operation field with no true convicting evidence except for the copies of their fake passports. This reminds us of the period in the seventies when a global war of assassinations was launched between the Israeli Mossad and the PLO cells and intelligence.
The seventies confrontation completely differs from today’s since the PLO enjoyed a good international relations with many other resistance movements and in certain cases intelligence services. This helped the PLO in collecting more information and spreading its men in several countries who were working with other men from the countries themselves. The PLO wanted at that time the confrontation with Israel to become international since it wanted the whole world to be involved.
Hamas and Hezbullah do not work alone especially in international matters and decision making. Any possible reaction to the assassinations which were made such as the assassination of Mughnyeh and Al-Mabhouh must come under an agreement between them and Iran. The reason is that such a confrontation may get out of control and become an open war between them and Israel. Beside this an Iranian help in such matters would the change the whole situation.
The question is if Israel is really behind these assassinations what is the message that it wants to send to the assassinated comrades and organizations? Is it that Israel can reach any of them at any time? Or simply a warning for the kidnappers of Gilad Shalit to remind them that if the latter dies their faith would be like Al-Mabhouh who was assassinated after more than twenty years? Or it wants to take the confrontation with Hamas abroad after its failure in defeating them in Gaza? Or it simply wants to create a kind of chaos and involve Iran in a wide confrontation which would change everything in the political situation of the Middle East? I believe it is all of these messages and more.
