Will there be any Peace soon in the Middle East?

January 18th, 2010 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

The situation in the Middle East keeps on developing towards the worst. Iraq is still in war although many try to convince the world that Will there be any Peace soon in the Middle East? 129 300x200 dove democracy has been achieved. Afghanistan is under attack and nothing until this moment has been achieved in order to say that the situation is becoming better. The Israeli Palestinian conflict is similar to the situation which we call silence before the storm. Iran’s crisis with the west is becoming more complicated every day and the later threatens to start serious economical sanctions if Iran does not forget about its nuclear projects.

I am not writing to be pessimistic but I would like to examine the current situation and try to see where the Middle East is going to. One year ago the world was optimistic that the change in the American administration will improve the situation and direct it towards peace in the area. Although President Obama made several promises about achieving peace and stability in the world unfortunately he found himself tracked in the change which he needs to do inside his country. I am not putting all the blame on the United States since it is well known that without a true cooperation from all the sides of the conflict nothing can be achieved. However, if we look at the situation in the field we cannot see any serious actions made to assure that the situation is developing into a better stage.

Iraq continues to suffer because of the chaotic situation which came as a result of the American attempt to bring “Democracy” into its system. The American forces and intelligence continue to face more complicated challenges while confronting Al-Qaeda cells in Afghanistan, Yemen, and the world. The Arab world formal system continues to lose control regarding security matters because of the Al-Qaeda spread out in the area. The reason that nothing succeeded in narrowing the activities and expansion of Al-Qaeda is that the only strategy which has been used is to implement military campaigns while ignoring the importance of improving the relations between the west and the east by supporting the latter to be more developed economically, Politically, and of course by supporting a fair solution to end the last occupation in the world which takes place on the Arab Palestinian lands that are considered extremely important in the eyes of the Arabs and Muslims.

Since Oslo’s agreement and until the beginning of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s work in office no serious Israeli offer was made in order to put an end to the Arab Israeli conflict. Instead settlements continue to spread in the West Bank, more Palestinians are imprisoned, more assassinations, and more Israeli campaigns against right of expression and demonstration. In time of negotiations Israel preferred to receive offers from the Palestinians instead of suggesting anything in order to make sure that it is not making any generous compromises.

Some could claim that former Israeli Prime Ministers such as Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert were ready to make generous compromises in order to reach peace with the Palestinians and the Syrians. These claimed offers were never suggested officially or even made written. Even if we want to consider them, they did not include the minimum which the Palestinians are ready to accept in order to sign a final peace agreement. Palestinians claim that their approval to admit an Israeli state on more than seventy percent of the historical land of Palestine is more than any needed true intentions or any compromise which any people could make in order to reach peace.

Israelis from the other side believe that it is their right to live in this land because of many reasons such as God’s promise for them to own it and their existence in it hundreds of years ago. Jerusalem is considered a non negotiable matter in the eyes of the majority of the Israelis. Some say that they are ready to make a compromise regarding Jerusalem but what they mean is only the neighborhoods around the Old City refusing the idea of returning the Aqsa Mosque to the hands of the Arabs.

The Palestinian refugee’s case is also considered a cold case which can never be solved because any solution will mean a death penalty to the dream of living in an Israeli Jewish state recognized by the world. Although the Palestinian prisoners must be considered as prisoners of war according to the International law, Israeli human rights organizations, and international ones, Israel continues to refuse the idea of releasing any of them who according to Israel has “Blood on their hands”. Water and natural sources are also considered an Israeli property although many exist in the West Bank territories which were supposed to be part of the future Palestinians state.

So simply all the matters which were supposed to be negotiated in order to reach a peace agreement became non negotiable and by this any attempt to reach peace became a waste of time. Despite the fact that many Palestinians and Israelis were killed in their conflict no one learned anything about the importance of ending it to save the life of those who are left. Although the Israeli occupation became clearly a reason for the birth of many radical movements who started to spread out in the world, no country understood that pressure brings extreme reactions. Instead many prefer to hold conferences and send envoys in order to dope the world with fake promises which do not last for a long time that everything is fine and peace is on its way only to make gains for their personal interests.

These temporary gains will bring after them more damage not only to the interests of one country but to the whole area and the former lessons which everyone ignored wanted us to understand this clearly.

    100 years ago Ottuman’s khilafah was leading, today Abbasi’s ri2asah does..lol ..

I think that we live in peace, that this is the max that we can get. and if there is more peace will come soon?, it will depened on what others give… and none is giving us, and we wont give up, we are unique in our cause because we fight to gain peace, though all what we get is war and negotiations…peace is not sentenced on this land… and because of that we should learn , how to fight… in peace…

writing about realty is not pessimistic… its a possible path to change …

    Good Article
