President Obama’s Speech in Cairo…Will it be different?
Recently the United States of America showed a brave and new change in its policy towards the Muslim world and the Israeli Arab conflict. This change was noticed in America’s view of the importance of finding a solution for the Israeli Arab conflict.
The change started to appear since President Obama’s entrance to the White House.
The European community and America stated clearly that ending the conflict in the Middle East will bring a great benefit to the Western World and better security for the world. The Israeli occupation of the Arab lands that started since more than sixty years created a kind of anger and hatred in the Arab world.
Since the establishment of the Hebrew State, the world has supported it in its occupation and control of the Arab lands. This empowered several extreme organizations and movements which are working in the Arab world to become stronger. The reason is that the Arab peoples believed that they can get their rights back only by force.
The political and economical situation of the Arab governments prevented them from taking extreme actions against Israel since they lacked the needed power and capability to do so. Beside this, the Peace agreements which were signed between some Arab states such as Jordan and Egypt prevented them from staying in a war state with Israel and turned it into a cold peace status. Instead of fighting Israel with force, the Arab states employed their efforts into convincing the world to support their demands in making Israel change its policy and withdraw from the Arab occupied lands.
One of the steps which the Arabs did was making the Arab Peace Initiative which promised Israel with a complete Arab recognition of its existence and sovereignty over the 1948 occupied lands of Palestine and start complete and normal relations with it. In exchange Israel is asked to withdraw from the 1967 occupied lands, accept a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem a capital, and find a fair solution for the refugee’s case. Israel did not agree on the Arab Peace Initiative and asked to make changes in it although the Arabs stated clearly that they are already asking for the minimum which they can accept.
The change in the American leadership and the appearance of new challenges in the world such as the Iranian ambitions to hold nuclear powers and the Russian change in policy convinced the new American leadership and the European Union that is extremely important to gain an Arab support and alliance. The basic of this change was President Obama’s new policy which said that Arabs should become true alliances instead of being countries which are exploited. President Obama wants to gain an Arab support by turning their relation with America into a kind that brings both sides benefits.
Therefore, President Obama started by assuring that the United States believes that only a two states solution would be the right answer to end the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Israel’s new government did not like this idea and tries to fight it with everything it has. However, Israel is clever enough to prevent any kind of tension in its relation with America. Therefore, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was cautious enough not to show a clear refusal of the American agenda.
President Obama’s speech in Cairo is supposed to hold new meanings and thoughts about the American Arab relations. Most of the Arab governments and a good percentage of the Arab peoples are waiting to hear the President’s speech in order to judge the future policy of America towards the Muslim and Arab world. The question is whether President Obama will be smart and cautious enough to satisfy both the Arab and Israeli interests, or he will fail like many former American Presidents in making such a different achievement.
President Obama’s challenge will be in translating his promises to the Arab world into real actions and also by stopping the Iranian threat which Israel is not ready to neglect anymore. The President’s Wisdom and power will prove whether he is able to succeed or not.
