Is Israel saved from the American Pressure?

May 24th, 2009 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

In the last week Israel was really under pressure because of the statements which were made about President Obama’s will to suggest a Peace plan in the beginning of June. This peace plan was supposed to make a notice about Jerusalem and consider East Jerusalem a capital for the future Palestinian State.

Since then, Israeli politicians were talking about the importance of getting Israel out of this situation in any way including the choice of removing some of the “illegal” Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Prime Minister Netanyahu stated two days ago in the ceremonies of what Israel calls “Jerusalem Union Day” that Jerusalem will never be divided again and it will always be the capital of Israel.

The foreign ministry of France stated yesterday that Jerusalem must be divided to become a capital for both the Palestinian and Israeli state. A notice was made also on the settlements which are being built currently in East Jerusalem in which Israel claims that population growth implies on Israel to build new settlements. However, France stated that the building of the settlements must be stopped immediately in which these actions are making the opportunity to reach peace in the Middle East almost impossible.

The White House stated that President Obama will not suggest a peace plan in his planned visit to Egypt in the beginning June. According to the White House spokesmen, the two sides of the conflicts should suggest plans for peace and that the President will not imply on them what to do.

This step which was made by the American government could give Israel another opportunity to find a solution for the current situation without feeling pressure on it. However, sooner or later Israel will have to introduce its view of the Middle East and a suggestion for a peace plan regarding its conflict with Syria and the Palestinians. The reason is that President Obama is convinced that the Arab support is very important in dealing with threats in the Middle East.

The Israeli current government is stating clearly that neither Jerusalem, nor the refugee’s case, nor a possible Palestinian state, are issues to discuss in any solution with the Palestinian. This means that it is impossible to reach any kind of peace agreement with Arabs. Therefore, the only choice which Israel will have if it decides not to imply President Obama’s policy is to try to create a new reality in the Middle East. This can be made for example by making a kind of an attack on Iran to change the American attention into finding a way to dace Iran with force.

If Israel chooses to commit itself to its current policy then the future of the Middle East will include wars and violence which this time may involve not only Iran and Israel, but the whole Middle East.
