The Idea of Prison

It is difficult to sit with a prisoner and listen to the kind of life he used to live while he was captured in small room filled with other prisoners. The life of a prisoner changes starting from his first day in prison. He has to live depending on new rules made by the people who live with him in his new home. It is actually like a jungle with animals from all the kinds and this is how the is how it begins: You go in and realize that there is a king for this new jungle with his servants that only work to satisfy him and his needs. When a new one comes in, everyone tries to examine his powers in order to know how to deal with him. In the Israeli prisons it is different than other places, if they want you live in hell, they put you in a criminal prison away from all the political and security prisoners. Their you will have to live with every kind of criminals: thief, gangsters, drug dealers, and even rapists. If you don’t know how to be strong and cautious then you would become a servant for all these criminals. You should be smart and know how to deal with every daily problem that could face you. Although a political prisoner has respect in a criminal prison and a criminal does not want to mess with political prisoners, still it is dangerous. What political prisoners do is that they try to stay together and live all in one room separately from other kind of prisoners, although this is usually forbidden by the administration of Israeli prisons. The question is what do we suppose a prisoner could think of the Israeli State and how would he or she react after releasing them. In some cases there were Palestinian prisoners that immediately returned to their fighting places after they were released in order to revenge what they suffered through the years they were kept and tortured in prisons. Others changed and went out to work for peace. The idea of prison was created in order to punish and also to try to fix a criminal, but when we are talking about political prisoners, it is completely different. Most of the Palestinian prisoners did not change their idea about the Israeli occupation even though they were imprisoned for a lot of years. This proves that as long as Israel keeps on holding these prisoners, it is only trying to have a temporary solution for their political activities, but they should also know that the long they keep these people in prison, the worse they will think and react against Israel .

One Response to The Idea of Prison

  1. Tasnim says:

This post reminded me of a book I read, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Ken Kesey. Except these men are in an institute, not a prison. And they do examine the newer men who come in, and there is a “king” who rules over them; that is what this reminded me of.

And it is a shame to Israel that they sometimes imprison people due to no known reason.

My great-uncle is a politician, and has been for many years, and he served 11 years in Israeli prison many years back. He learned smoking, he learned playing cards, it wasn’t to the benefit of anyone. Because when he left, he still held a grudge against Israel. I just don’t get why they do it sometimes…there isn’t always a logical reason for them to do so.

    Nice post :)
