The Art of Conflict

March 20th, 2009 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

Since the establishment of Israel, a conflict started between the latter and the Palestinians. Israel decided to admit according to the International Law that the 1967 occupied lands are considered occupied by the Israelis too. Once this is recognized, the next question which will be asked is why Israel does not withdraw from these lands although it admits that it is occupying them.

To understand this issue about the Israeli Palestinian conflict, it is recommended to go back to the International Law and treaties which were signed to make order in the International community. Some consider the International Law a game in the hands of the great powers of the world that is designed in a way that serves their interests and brings benefit to their allies. The Land of Palestine is considered problematic in the International Law. Some laws which were admitted by the International Law but were not admitted by Israel declare that the land of Palestine was and is not occupied. This law stands on the question of who did own the land before Israel took it.

Israel did not like this law and preferred to say that the 1948 occupied lands of Palestine are the lands of Israel and the 1967 occupied lands of Palestine are formally occupied by Israel. The Peace process which Israel claimed to lead has a purpose of returning these lands to the Palestinians. This statement which Israel sells to the world bring it benefit in two different ways.

On one hand, Israel gains support from the world because of its “intentions” to make peace by giving back lands to the Palestinians. On the other hand, Israel dismisses itself from the responsibility of millions of Palestinians who are living in the West Bank and Gaza. If Israel was to recognize a law which considers the whole land of Palestine not occupied, then it will be forced to give rights of citizenship not only for Jews but for the Palestinians who will be living under the Israel state. This means a death penalty to the Jewish hope of living in a Jewish country.

The Israeli real interests does not give any chance for a real process of negotiations to end the conflict and give back the lands of 1967 to the Palestinians; Israel sees in these lands as a first line protection from the surrounding Arab countries. The Israeli thought is built on force and fear; having a strong army, leading wars every two or three years, and creating a kind of fear in the minds of the Arabs will keep the security of Israel safe. However, this political and military thought does not seem to be succeeding currently since Lebanon and Gaza last wars showed the opposite; as much as Israel strikes more, the Arabs become closer to the choice of war and force.

These Israeli interests demand to direct the conflict instead of ending it; the occupied lands of 1967 are still under the Israeli control while at the same time Israel is convincing the world that it is ready to compromise it for the sake of peace. It is easy to make a claim that Israel wants to give the Palestinians their lands, and act in a different way. However, this way of directing the conflict seems to be smart but lacks any kind of morals. The international Law contradicts with the Israeli actions. Israel signed on the international Law but did not bring it into its internal law. Therefore, it is not obliged to apply it into its courts of law. By doing this, Israel uses the laws it wants from the International law, and leaves the others which does not serve its interests.

Israeli actions which contradicts with International Law are many and differ from each other; one example is the separating wall, the other is the vanishing of Palestinians into other states, the prisoners, checkpoints, ways of treating civilians under occupation, killing hundreds of civilians in fights with the Palestinians and claiming that the Palestinians were the reason. A couple of days ago Israeli soldiers admitted that they were brain washed before the war to kill everything they see in Gaza with no difference between a military man or a civilian. They admitted that families were killed with no care and blamed the army commanders for the situation which they were brought into.

Israel is directing its conflict with the Palestinians in a professional way but the question is whether this can last forever or serve the security of Israel. Playing the game professionally may bring an International support for Israel but will cause damage to the Peace process which is becoming an illusion in everyday that passes.

Well said brother! And they get all this support from America, yet the world does not see their silent crimes! Israel was never and never will be a “Jewish” state, it will always be a “Zionist” state…not religious.

The Balfour Declaration was for the purpose of the British hoping to gain more Jewish support for the Allies of World War I. And do most people know this? No, some people do not even know what the Balfour Declaration is!

    Well said :)
