Prime Minster Salam Fayyad resigns
Today, Salam Fayyad declared his resignation from the Palestinian Authority government which he established after Hamas took control of Gaza about two years ago. Palestinian analysts said that this step was made to encourage the talks between Fatah and Hamas to end their division.
Salam Fayyad is considered an important man for the Palestinian Authority since the United States’ support for the Palestinian is given with conditions that he leads the government. Fayyad said that he hopes his resignation will become active in the end of the month after the establishment of the new Palestinian Unity Government. Hamas leaders said that Fayyad’s resignation is a step which should have been made a long time ago; according to them his government was never legitimate.
Fatah and Hamas are discussing the new arrangements which should be made to end the division. Currently, nothing is clear whether they agreed on ending their argument about who should lead the Palestinian Authorities. There are many points which they should agree on and it is difficult for both of them to agree easily on any kind of disclaimer.
Israel is still arranging its internal situation and preparing its new government. Netanyahu will make a government which is built on the right Israeli parties. This will make it harder for him since any future clash between the members of his government about the budget will cause an immediate fall of it. Politically, Netanyahu continues to state that the two states solution is not possible currently and that the Palestinian Economy is his aim now. The possible Palestinian Unity government will make it harder on Netanyahu since he will not find much support from the world when the Palestinians will be ready to negotiate and united at the same time.
The Israeli current projects to enlarge the settlements in the West Bank, destroying thousands of houses in East Jerusalem, assassinations, and imprisoning more Palestinians will only make the situation worse for the Israelis. Moderate Palestinians will prefer to resign and leave the Political field once they see that it is not possible to make any kind of improvement through diplomatic channels with Israel.
Therefore, Israel should immediately stop its current projects which are only encouraging more Palestinians to lose faith in any kind of solutions through peace. The United States and the International community must act within their responsibilities and stop these actions exactly as they act to stop other actions in other areas of the world.
