Palestinians Warn to Stop Negotiations

March 3rd, 2009 > Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad

More than eighty seven states participated in Gaza support conference which was held yesterday in Sharm Elshekh. The conference resulted in bringing more than five milliard dollars to support the institutions of the Palestinian Authority and to rebuild Gaza after the huge destruction which was caused by the Israeli last war on it.

Hillary Clinton stated that the United States will not cooperate with Hamas unless the last recognizes the Israeli state, denies use of violence, and agrees on peaceful ways to solve the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Other European and world Leaders stated that the financial support is not enough since the borders must be opened in order to enter the needed funds inside Gaza. The majority agreed that the money should be transferred to the Palestinians through the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas criticized the conference and considered it another attempt to buy from Palestinians political statements that contradict with their values with money. However, the secret talks between Hamas and the west seem to be improving although it will take a long time until real results could be seen. The Fatah – Hamas talks seem to be important to end the Palestinian inside division. However, both sides are negotiating on several points including the unity government, the political prisoners, the control of the borders, and the way the financial support will be entered into Gaza.

In an important message which was sent today to the United States, the Palestinian Authority said that the only and last chance to end the conflict and make two states is in danger. The Palestinians stated that no negotiations will be held with any Israeli government that denies the Two States solution. The Palestinian Authority made it clear to the United States that the moderate Palestinians will have to make their decision now in order to save their existence inside the Palestinian community.

The situation in the Middle East will change depending on the new Israeli government decisions regarding the Two States solution and negotiations with the Palestinians. President Mahmoud Abbas, who is considered the most moderate Palestinian leader, made it clear that neither he nor Fatah will negotiate with an Israeli government that denies the right of the Palestinians to live in their own state.

Netanyahu, who is supposed to become the new Israeli Prime Minister in less than a month, seems to be decisive regarding his decision not to go to negotiations about a Palestinian state. The United States seems to have different ideas from Netanyahu; it keeps on promising to support only the Two States solution. Challenges such as the Iranian threat and the Palestinian case are sensitive and the America wisdom and pressure are both important to prevent a new war in the Middle East.
